Unit 1: Exploring One-Variable Data (15–23%)

Focuses on describing and summarizing single-variable data.

Unit 2: Exploring Two-Variable Data (5–7%)

Analyzes relationships between two variables.

  • Are variables related?

  • Representing two categorical variables

  • Statistics for two categorical variables

  • Representing relationships between two quantitative variables

  • Correlation

  • Linear regression models

  • Residuals

  • Least-squares regression

  • Departures from linearity


Unit 3: Collecting Data (12–15%)

Covers data collection methods and experimental design.

  • Do the data tell the truth?

  • Planning a study

  • Random sampling and data collection

  • Problems with sampling

  • Experimental design basics

  • Selecting an experimental design

  • Inference and experiments


Unit 4: Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions (10–20%)

Introduces probability models and random variables.

  • Random vs non-random patterns

  • Estimating probabilities (simulation)

  • Intro to probability

  • Mutually exclusive events

  • Conditional probability

  • Independent events and unions

  • Random variables and probability distributions

  • Mean & standard deviation of random variables

  • Combining random variables

  • Binomial distribution (definition, parameters)

  • Geometric distribution


Unit 5: Sampling Distributions (7–12%)

Develops sampling distributions and their use in inference.

  • Why is my sample not like yours?

  • Normal distribution (revisited)

  • Central Limit Theorem

  • Biased and unbiased point estimates

  • Sampling distributions for sample proportions

  • Sampling distributions for differences in proportions

  • Sampling distributions for sample means

Unit 6: Inference for Categorical Data – Proportions (12–15%)

Introduces inference procedures for proportions.

  • Why be normal?

  • Confidence intervals for a population proportion

  • Claims using confidence intervals

  • Significance tests for proportions

  • Interpreting $p$-values

  • Completing tests for proportions

  • Errors in significance testing

  • Confidence intervals for two proportions

  • Claims for differences in proportions

  • Significance tests for two proportions


Unit 7: Inference for Quantitative Data – Means (10–18%)

Focuses on inference procedures for means.

  • Should I worry about error?

  • Confidence intervals for a mean

  • Claims for means using intervals

  • Significance tests for means

  • Carrying out tests for means

  • Confidence intervals for difference of two means

  • Claims for differences in means

  • Significance tests for two means

  • Skills focus: selecting & communicating inference procedures


Unit 8: Inference for Categorical Data – Chi-Square (2–5%)

Uses chi-square procedures to test categorical associations.

  • Are my results unexpected?

  • Chi-square goodness of fit test

  • Chi-square test for goodness of fit (execution)

  • Expected counts in two-way tables

  • Chi-square test for homogeneity/independence (setup & execution)

  • Selecting appropriate inference procedures for categorical data


Unit 9: Inference for Quantitative Data – Slopes (2–5%)

Applies inference procedures to regression slopes.

  • Do those points align?

  • Confidence intervals for regression slopes

  • Claims about regression slopes with intervals

  • Significance tests for regression slopes (setup & execution)
